Chapter Eleven: Motives

Georgina, and the girls met up with Jeffrey outside of the barracks in the middle of the morning. He had just emerged for a breath of fresh air after spending time in a closed room with Birk Watters. How did the man manage to smell of alcohol when he was supposed to be quarantined without access to the tavern?

The girls were looking especially presentable. When he complimented them on their appearance, to his surprise, it was Mairi who responded. “Mrs. George was teaching us about hair,” she whispered. “She knows so much.”

“She is as smart as she is pretty,” he agreed.

“We had a good time trying out different hair styles,” Georgina told him. “Margaret and I took the time to go through the family’s trunk to see if there are enough winter clothes for them, including what can be altered. I do not suppose among your many skills is the ability to remake clothes?” she teased. “I am going to need some help altering coats for them.”

“I might help you, Mrs. George.” They were joined by Eliza Cameron, who was carrying buckets and obviously on her way to the communal well. “I don’t do fancy work, embroidery and such, but I can sew a strong seam. If you show me what you need done, I am sure I can help. Granny too.”

The variety of nicknames for his wife amused Chadwick. Both he and Paddy had gotten into the habit of calling her George when she was wearing boy’s clothes during their adventures in France. Now the nickname had crossed the Atlantic with her.

“Do you know where David is, Mistress Cameron?” asked Margaret. “Captain has given me money to buy candy at the mercantile,” she added proudly. She held out her hand, clutching the few coins Jeffrey had given her, for Eliza to admire.

“Oh, that sounds lovely,” Eliza said. “You are very generous, Sir.”

“However, I seem to have forgotten about the other children. Here, Margaret, get some candy for the others as well, won’t you?” he added a few coins to her hoard.

“David is in the main room,” Eliza told the youngster. “His father is trying to get him to do sums, for all the good it is. Just too noisy in there for studying. I am sure he will be glad of the break.” After the girls ran off, she turned to Chadwick and Georgina. “Everybody is rather anxious. I think we are disappointed we have to stay in the barracks. I would love to see the town, I have never seen a real town. However, I better get this water, or Miss Robertson will be snapping at me again.”

“You would think they would be used to each other after all the time on the boat,” Georgina mused.

“Now there is the stress that one of them is a murderer,” Jeffrey said thoughtfully.

“Birk have anything to offer?” she asked.

“Beside fumes of alcohol? No, sadly. The man seems totally at sea without his wife. He asked where Bonnie was and then passed out.
